Baku White City Mall
Azerbaijan is often refered to as ‘the Land of Fire’; A theme that is reflected in other Baku landmarks, such as the Ateshgah Fire Temple and the Baku Flame Towers.
The design draws inspiration from the nearby landmark; Yanar Dag (Burning Mountain). Yanar Dag is an eternally burning flame found on a hillside near Baku. This natural phenomenon is caused by a steady flow of ignited gas seeping through the porous sandstone landscape up to the surface.
The kinetic facade of the mall mimicks the gentle rippling pattern of a burning flame; creating a flickering piece of living art.
The facade can also be illuminated to give the impression of rippling water: reflecting the malls close proximity to the waterfront.
