This week we are proud to introduce Raquel Figueiras Meireles Head of Landscape at Kettle Collective, based at our Dubai studio. In this Q&A, Raquel shares more about herself including insights into her career, experience, inspirations, and some top tips for those entering the industry:

1.  What brought you to Kettle Collective, and what were you doing before?

I was previously working at Cracknell for over a decade, but it was always a dream of mine to lead and develop a landscape team. That’s why I’m so delighted to be taking this step in my career with Kettle Collective. The opportunity to shape and grow a dedicated team was a key reason I decided to join.

2.  What do you enjoy most about your job and working in this industry?

For me, I love to see the projects I work on from initial concept through to design stage come to life. It is very rewarding to have a positive impact and see real people using and enjoying the spaces we create.What inspires you in landscape architecture?An early inspiration for me was the works of landscape architects Bull Marx and Piet Oudolf, due to their bold design language and outstanding planting knowledge. Nowadays I am now more inspired by the collective works of design studios that are focused on placemaking and innovative design ideas, which is my goal to achieve at Kettle Collective.

3.  What do you enjoy outside of work?

Crossfit or any other forms of intensive exercise. It’s a great way to keep body and mind strong and healthy. I am also constantly listening to music and every time I get the opportunity, I check cultural events in Dubai or travel.

4.  What advice would you give to someone starting in landscape architecture today?

I would say to start off your career in a large practice where possible, as usually there is more opportunity to learn about all stages and get good experience. I would also recommend taking your time to develop technical skills, to embrace technology, and to explore how software and AI can help you to stay ahead. Always keep learning and stay curious!
